During air show, on July 27,2002, honoring the 60th anniversary of the 14th Air Corps in Lviv airport Sknyliv, Su-27UB (Armed Forces of Ukraine) fell in to the crowd and Killed 77 people (including 28 children).
The Su-27UB was under control (performing aerobatics) of two pilots: 45-year-old commander VA Toponar and 49-year-old co-pilot YM Egorov. The plane went into a downward turn at low altitude. Despite the attempt to get out of the bend-up fighter lost height too quickly. The plane hit a tree, then hit the the concrete with left wing and keep sliding on the ground through the airfield filled with spectators. The plane slide to standing IL-76 and began to tumble, the reservoir fell to the ground, there was an explosion and the plane was completely destroyed.
As a result of the disaster 77 people was killed, including 28 children, several hundred people received injuries of varying severity. To the place of the fall were immediately pulled calculations and fire brigade ambulance.
Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma blame for the tragedy laid on the military, dismissed Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Colonel-General Viktor Strelnikov. Simultaneously, the Ukrainian defense minister Vladimir Shkidchenko tendered his resignation, however, the resignation was not accepted.
6th of September, 2002 the results of the investigation Commission of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine were published. As the main causes of the tragedy was “An error in piloting Su-27”
