MiG-29 flight to the Edge of Space
Did you know that you can fly several fighter jets as a civilian – without being a fighter pilot? Unfortunately the Su-27 Flanker (Su-30) is no longer available for flights. But it was actually possible to book Sukhoi Su-27 for fun as a tourist, until 2006.
The location was Zhukovsky/Ramenskoe airbase, where the MAKS airshow takes place. Other jets available at this time where MiG-25 Edge of Space flights, MiG-23 (aerobatics/supersonic), MiG-29 (aerobatics/supersonic) and the L-39 Albatros (aerobatics).
Since 2006, the flights to the stratosphere – often called Edge of Space flights, take place in the MiG-29 Fulcrum.The MiG-29 Fulcrum is located in Nizhny Novgorod. Included in the Edge of Space flight is sueprsonic flying, up to Mach 2, and aerobatics. Also, you can control the MiG-29 Fulcrum jet yourself during the flight.
And pretty crazy – you’ll reach altitudes of 20km. From up there, you can see the curvature of the earth. And the sky above is all black, with countless stars that you can see very clear. And the blue fog far below is the atmosphere. So it looks a bit like from a satellite.
